Bioscience Foundations Program

A Portal to the Bioscience Industry for Oregon’s Dislocated Professionals

What is the Bioscience Industry?

“Bio” means the use of biological processes and technology to solve problems and make useful products. At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based on biology. More broadly, biotechnology utilizes the sciences of biology, botany, chemistry, geology, physics, engineering, computers and information technology to develop tools, processes and products that bring great promise. Biotechnology companies all over the world are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology technologies. What is the Bioscience Foundations Program?

BIOSCIENCE FOUNDATIONS is a short term training program designed to match highly skilled and experienced professionals from other industries with internships and potential job placements with Portland bioscience companies. Internships currently being offered are for quality engineers, quality program managers, process engineers and operations managers. Additional internships for these types of experienced professionals are being added every day.

Applicants will be screened and interviewed by the companies with whom they will intern. Selected participants will then enter a two-week intensive classroom segment taught by bioscience experts from both the public and private sector. They will learn about the various segments of the industry and about its regulated nature. They will research the issues and the ethics that impact the public agenda and will learn about the innovative environment that characterizes the industry. Upon successful completion of the classroom segment, participants then begin a 30-90 day internship with a bioscience company. These internships are intended to give both the candidate and the company a chance to test the fit between them and should, assuming both parties are satisfied, lead to a job offer.

What’s the Program Timeline and Location?

Applications for the first cohort will be accepted until Oct. 2nd and selection of participants will be completed by Oct. 29th. The classroom segment will run between Nov. 2nd and 13th with internships beginning Nov. 16th and completing by late January. Job placements for the first cohort are expected by mid-February. Recruitment for a second cohort will begin in late November. The classroom segment of the program will be held at the Portland State Business Accelerator building in downtown Portland. Internships will take place at the various companies participating in the program. Details will be made available as candidates progress in the selection process.
